Programme Overview and Qualifications
Sanitary engineering is a profession dedicated to protecting and improving the health of individuals and communities, as well as preventing disease by implementing measures that maintain hygienic, sanitary, and epidemiological standards in both living and working environments. Students in this programme primarily focus on solving public health issues. The curriculum covers all aspects of the ecosystem and the physical and chemical factors that impact human health. In collaboration with other healthcare professionals, students are trained to identify, assess, and remediate environmental factors that may pose a threat to individual or public health. They also engage in general and targeted activities to raise ecological awareness among the population with the goal of improving public health.
Expected Competencies
Graduates holding a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Sanitary Engineering are qualified to perform professional duties aligned with the competencies recommended by the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER). These include coordinating and monitoring hygiene-epidemiological conditions; identifying health hazards; planning and managing disinfection, disinsection, and deratisation operations; monitoring environmental factors; and conducting sanitary inspections in facilities involved in the production and distribution of food. They may also work in government bodies related to municipal and sanitary inspection services, monitor regulatory aspects of health protection, and oversee hygiene and sanitary standards. Sanitary engineers are trained to propose corrective measures, implement preventive sanitary supervision, and ensure health and environmental safety in areas such as water, air, soil, and food, following hygienic and sanitary principles.
